Investors' Awareeness Programme held in Rajshahi And Bogra

Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) arranged two separate programmes on investors’ awareness at Rajshahi on June 9, 2007 and at Parjatan Motel in Bogra on June 10, 2007. With DSE President Mr Md. Abdullah Bokhari in the chair, the programmes were attended by SEC Member Mr. Mansur Alam, DSE Senior Vice President Mr. Ahmad Rashid Lali, Vice President Mr. Sharif Ataur Rahman, Directors Mr. Md. Rakibur Rahman, Mr. Kazi Firoz Rashid, Mr Abdul Haque, Mr. Khwaja Ghulam Rasul, Mr. M.A. Quayum, Mr. Md. Azizul Hoque and Mr. Shahed Abdul Khaleque, ICB Managing Director Mr. Ziaul Haque Khandker and SEC Executive Director Mr. Anwarul Kabir Bhuiyan and President of Bogra Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr. Fazlur Rahman Paikar. High officials of DSE and SEC, chamber leaders of Rajshahi and Bogra, local bank officials and a large number of investors attended.
DSE President Mr Md. Abdullah Bokhari in his speech said DSE has paved the way for establishing a secondary market at the divisional level of the country through a modern automated trading system to reach the investment facility at the remote areas. DSE Brokers are taking part in the trading through different branch offices through upgradation of DSE’s automated online system. A new chapter in the DSE history was opened through the inter-district trading.

“A thorough knowledge on the stock market can ensure participation of more and more investors in the securities market and there is no alternative of a vibrant capital market to develop the country’s economy through the spontaneous participation of investors.” DSE President Mr Bokhari said. DSE Senior Vice President Mr. Ahmad Rashid Lali said it is possible to establish big industrial units though small capital owned by small investors of the securities market. Besides capital gain is also possible when the stock prices rise. Share business is a legal business as per Islamic law. World renowned Islamic scholars in an international conference in Cairo in 1986 recognised the share trading as a legal one. He said the DSE has taken all-out preparation to handle daily turnover worth Tk 5.0 billion within next two-three years as strong companies under telecommunications and power and energy will go public by this time.
DSE Chief Executive Officer Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed Khan said the DSE trading has been expanded through the upgraded automated system. He asked the investors to invest considering the financial strength of the companies concerned. He presented an overview on different aspects of investment operations in primary market and secondary market, central depository system and clearing and settlement systems of stock trading. SEC Member Mr. Mansur Alam thanked the DSE for its efforts to develop the country’s securities market. He said the securities market is no more Dhaka-based, rather it has expanded across the country. He hoped that DSE will reach at the doorsteps of every investor in near future. As the regulatory body, he said, SEC will assist the DSE in developing various areas of the securities market.

ICB Managing Director Mr. Ziaul Haque Khandker in his speech thanked the DSE for arranging the event in the district of Bogra known as hub of business and trade in northern Bangladesh. He declared that ICB will open a branch office within a short period in Bogra to facilitate the stock business in the district. President of Bogra Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr. Fazlur Rahman Paikar thanked the DSE for arranging the programme and assured to help in arranging such event in future also. The DSE CEO replied to the queries of investors in the programmes.

DSE has already provided necessary logistic support to the investors to trade from the divisional cities. The bourse has expanded its trading network inside Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and other cities through IT vendor companies. The vendor companies are using optical fiber, radio-link and asymmetric digital subscription link (ADSL) in addition to optical fiber to do their networking business. DSE began online stock business in Chittagong through LankaBangla Securities, a member of both DSE and Chittagong Stock Exchange from August of 2005. The DSE move on business expansion was taken in view of an upgraded trading system launched from August 21 of 2005 to cater to the growing demands of securities market including enhanced trading capacity of 50,000 howlas per day, which is scaleable upto 100,000.Previously the daily trading capacity was 15000 only. Hewlett & Packard (HP) of USA, Scandent Solutions of Chennai (India) and Syscom Information Systems Ltd of Bangladesh completed the upgradation project at a cost of Tk 60-million which doubled the previous 16-bit Tandem Electronic Security Architecture (TESA) application to 32-bit architecture.

Fear for Safety

BANGLADESH Ahmadiyya Community in the city of Bogra
Leaders of Islamist groups have threatened to attack members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat religious community, on Friday 11 March, in the city of Bogra. This attack is intended to be a strong statement by Islamist groups to pressure the government to declare Bangladesh’s Ahmadis “non-Muslims“.
This attack will be the culmination of a hate campaign led by the Islamists in Bogra and the nearby regions of Rajshahi, Natore and Gaibandha over the past week. Members of Islamist groups have been conducting this hate campaign in an attempt to raise support for the planned attack in Bogra this Friday.
This planned attack follows a pattern of similar attacks on Ahmadi places of worship in the districts of Chittagong, Patuakhali, Narayangonj, Brahmabaria, Nakhalpara and Dhaka over the past year. Civil society groups and NGOs have come forward in solidarity with the Ahmadis in the face of previous attacks, and will be present in Bogra to support the Ahmadi community on Friday.
Previous attacks on the Ahmadis have been foiled by the assistance of local police and civil society groups, but it is feared that public speeches by Islamists inciting mobs to violence, the possible confiscation of Ahmadi prayer books and the hanging of signs on the place of worship, warning all Muslims that this is a place of worship for non-Muslims, will lead to violent attacks on members of the Ahmadi community this Friday.
BACKGROUND INFORMATIONBy targeting the Ahmadiyya community, Islamist groups are believed to be attempting to force the government to yield to their political demand for the introduction of more stringent Islamic law in Bangladesh. The groups are hoping to obtain mass support from poor and disenfranchised sections of society, whom they feel they could influence by appealing to their religious beliefs.
Although the local authorities have reportedly in the past taken measures to ensure the safety of the Ahmadis, the national government has yet to take the important step of publicly condemning this incitement of violence against the Ahmadiyya community.
In the past year, Amnesty International has documented abuses by Islamist groups including the killing of an Ahmadi preacher; a ban on Ahmadiyya publications; rallies inciting violence against Ahmadis; and the rising wave of hate speech and public rallies calling for the Ahmadis to be declared non-Muslims. Amnesty international has also expressed concern by an edict by a local Islamist leader which forbade Ahmadis from buying or selling goods in their village, harvesting their crops, sending their children to school or even talking to one another in the presence of other villagers, which effectively confined the Ahmadis to their homes, and only ended when the Home Ministry intervened after 25 days.

Very close to the town there is a place called Mahasthangar which was the earliest capital city of Bangladesh. This place is considered to be sacred by Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus alike. "Behular Bashor Ghar" which very near to Mahasthangar is a popular place for the tourists. Tourists from all over Bangladesh visit this place throughout the year. Bogra has gone through massive development projects over the past few years. Its development progress is much greater comparing to rest of Bangladesh.

Historical events Mahasthangarh (pundranagara), located 10 km to the north of Bogra town, was the capital of pundravardhana. During the 4th to 8th century BC this region was ruled by various dynasties. From the middle of 8th century it went under Pala rule that continued till 12th century. Sena King vijayasena conquered the region defeating the last Pala King madanpala. Bogra came under the Muslim rule after bakhtiyar khalji conquered Nadia. In 1281-1290 AD, Sultan Nasiruddin Bagra Khan, the second son of the emperor of Delhi Sultan ghiyasuddin balban became the ruler of Bengal. Bogra was named after him. The anti British Fakir-Sannyasi movement spread over Bogra region since the early British rule. The leader of the fakirs majnu shah had direct encounters with the British. The Indigo Rebellion spread over Bogra in mid 19th century.

History
Bogra Zilla School is the first among the government high schools in the whole Bogra district during the British rule. It had been a private English school before becoming public. There were only a few students in the school in that time. It came under governmental management through the earnest effort of magistrate and collector Mr. Russell and deputy collector Babu S. Mukharjee. And it was the beginning of the journey to the bright and enriched future of the institute.
By this time, Babu Bhagabati Charan Ghosh was appointed as the Headmaster of the school. With great proficiency, he had been holding the post for six years. Bogra's famous child Babu Kishoree Lal Roy, who is the author of many philosophical writings, was then the student of this school. While describing about in his book ‘Free Enquiry after Truth', he wrote, “In 1853 a Government English school was established here and I obtained my entrance into it. My progress in this institution has been remarked by its first and best of its Headmasters that ever were, to have been remarkably rapid. Be it said with deep respect and gratitude that under the judicious tuition of Babu Bhagabati Charan Ghosh I obtained a useful knowledge of the English language within about four years and a half. I have always thought Bhahabati Babu to be one of my greatest benefactors on Earth and will think so for ever also.”
There were totally four teachers during the period of Bhagabati Babu. According to the National School Committee, the school appeared to be started to principally by the sons and relatives of the clerks officers connected with the Courts. After Bhagabati Babu, A. C. Mukharjee became the Headmaster in 1859. During his period of tuition, in that year, two students passed in 2nd division and one passed in 1st division with scholarship in 1862. After this, the school continued to progress day by day. By this time, the practice of giving books as rewards to the students of both Bangla and English schools as per their performance was started. The prize giving ceremony used to be very gorgeous. More than a hundred taka used to be spent for fireworks. With the presence of many people from the town and nearby villages, the town came to life. Within 1859-60, the inspector of the schools of the north-east areas and Assam , Mr. W. Robinson gathered students and people while giving the prizes. He arranged a demonstration with ‘magic lantern' for their entertainment and showed many interesting and educative events of nature such as moving of stars and planets, solar and lunar eclipse, cyclone etc. Within 1881-85, the school building was constructed of bricks.
In 1873-74, there were six teachers, one pundit and one moulavi in the school. There were 85 students in there in 1860-61. In 1907-08, the number of students was 363. Among them, 218 were Hindus and 145 were Muslims.

Early life
Born at Bogra to a family descended from the Nawabs of Bengal, he attended the University of Calcutta and followed his education with a career in politics. In 1937 he began to receive prominence when he was elected to the assembly of Bengal. He would move up within the government of Bengal, serving under Khawaja Nazimuddin as the Health Minister.
Upon the formation of Pakistan in 1947, Bogra was put into the foreign service, and served in Burma, Canada, and eventually as ambassador to the United States.

Prime Minister
In 1953, he was selected by Governor General of Pakistan Ghulam Muhammad to replace Khawaja Nazimuddin as the Prime Minister. Bogra was a relatively unknown personality to the national political scene of that time. He was serving as Ambassador to the US when he was recalled to take the office of Prime Minister. As Prime Minister, he set out to form a constitution.

In order to complete this, he outlined his famous "Bogra Formula" that sought to form a bicameral legislature. An Upper House would have contained 50 seats, 10 from each province, i.e. with 10 from East Pakistan and 40 from West Pakistan. A Lower House would have contained 300 seats. The lower house seats would be determined by population of province, and East Pakistan would have 165 seats, while the four provinces of West Pakistan would have a combined 135 seats, but would be split among the provinces. A provision was also put in place that stated that if the President of Pakistan were from West Pakistan, then the Prime Minister would have to be from East Pakistan, and vice-versa. The plan was very popular, but was killed when Ghulam Muhammad dissolved the Pakistani Assembly later in 1953.

Bogra was forced to resign in 1955 by the new Governor General, Iskander Mirza. He returned to his post as ambassador to the United States. In 1962 he became the foreign minister of Pakistan, until his death in 1963. He was buried in his hometown of Bogra in present day Bangladesh.

Ancient history
The history says it was the oldest city of Bengal in the Great Emperor Ashoka's India. He conquered the Bengal (Bongo) and founded this old city called Pundra Bardhan. It was famously written in famous ancient travellers of that time[citation needed].
An ancient engraved stone believed to be of Gupta era was discovered from the bank of a pond near Sura Masjid at Ghoraghat Upazila in Dinajpur in October 08.

British rule
Bagura or Bogra was a town and district of British India, in the Rajshahi division of eastern Bengal and Assam. The town is situated on the right bank of the river Karatoya. But the present District Of Bogra, was first formed in 1821. It contains an area of 1359 mi² (3,520 km²). In 1901 the population of the town was 3,094 and of the district (on a reduced area) was 854,533, showing an increase of 11% in the decade. The district stretches out in a level plain, intersected by numerous streams and dotted with patches of jungle. The Karatoya flows from north to south, dividing it into two portions, possessing very distinct characteristics. The eastern tract consists of rich alluvial soil, well watered, and subject to fertilizing inundations, yielding heavy crops of coarse rice, oil-seeds and jute. The western portion of the district is high-lying and produces the finer qualities of rice.
The principal rivers are formed by the different channels of the Brahmaputra, which river here bears the local names of the Konai, the Daokoba and the Jamuna, the last forming a portion of the eastern boundary of the district. Its bed is studded with alluvial islands. The Brahmaputra and its channels, together with three minor streams, the Bangali, Karatoya and Atrai, afford admirable facilities for commerce, and render every part of the district accessible to native cargo boats of large burden. The rivers swarm with fish. The former production of indigo is extinct, and the industry of silk-spinning is decaying. There is no town with as many as 10,000 inhabitants, trade being conducted at riverside marts. Nor are there any metalled roads. Several lines of railway (the Eastern Bengal, &c.), however, serve the district[1].

In the Bangladesh Liberation War, the area witnessed a fierce battle - Battle of Bogra - between the allied troops of Mitro Bahini and Indian Army (together/combined) which defeated the Pakistan Army.

Educational institute
There are numerous educational institutes. Bogra Zilla School is the most famous among them. Bogra Zilla School is situated at the centrer of the Bogra town (Saathmathha). It was established back in 1853. The Government girls' high school is popularly known as Victoria Memorial(VM) girls high school. There are some English medium schools like Millennium Scholastic School, BIAM Laboratory school, etc. It has the biggest college in the north Bengle region named Government Azizul Haque College which is under the national university. A large medical college & hospital named Shaheed Ziaur Rahman medical college, equipped with adnavced facilities has been started recently. For technical hands, nevertheless, there is a famous polytechnic institute. Bogra Cantt. Public School & College is also a high ranked instituition. Armed Police Battalion Public School & college is another notable institution.

Next Generation City
In the recent years there is a significant change in town infrastructure. Now it is merging to new advanced urban planning. The town roads are restructured & widen enough to facilitate the citizens. It is the combined effort of the Govt. & people of Bogra. Real state business is flourishing high & developers are focused now on apartment business. First class hotels are being offered to tourists. NAJ Garden is the highest rank hotel in Bogra. Intra & Inter city Communications is an advantage. CNG auto rikshaws are available to ply throughout Bogra city at a very convenient price. Also Bus & other services are available. Next Generation Mobile telecommuncations are being built focusing Bogra city as it is the heart of northern Bangladesh. There are facilities to land jet planes in Bogra (Bogra reserved Airport). All the inhouse & outbound people of Bogra are trying their level best to make Bogra a Next Generation City (NGC) with whom Bangladesh can be proud of.
